Dear Gastroenterology Fellow:
We welcome you to Arnot Health. The main goal of the Fellowship Program in Gastroenterology is to provide Internal Medicine specialists with subspecialty training in the fields of digestive and liver diseases, allowing competence to be achieved in the requisite knowledge base, critical thinking skills, procedural skills, humanistic and ethical skills encompassed by these fields.
Our trainees are exposed to clinical and procedural activities designed to gradually increase in complexity while they gradually decrease in the level of directed supervision. These activities are supplemented with a comprehensive program curriculum of continuous didactic review, clinical teaching sessions, literature review, quality improvement meetings and various other programs designed to enhance and address training and awareness of the humanistic and professional issues in our field.
Trainees are provided structured opportunities to develop teaching skills at a variety of levels. Additionally, trainees participate in scientific research as a means of promoting the development of the investigative and inquisitive critical thinking skills required of subspecialty consultants in order to generate new knowledge and improve patient care.

Curriculum
3-year program, 2 fellows per year
The Gastroenterology Fellowship will offer a learning opportunity for fellows and give them the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function as gastroenterologists in any setting. Fellows’ interests and needs are considered, and the program is designed to maximize the opportunity to attain their personal and professional goals. Clinical, endoscopic, patient management, diagnostic, and procedural skills will be learned. The fellow will rotate at Arnot Ogden Medical Center and Clarion Hospital locations primarily; however, the fellow will have a specialty rotation at Allegheny Health Network as well.
The fellow’s training is completed at Arnot Ogden Medical Center and Clarion Hospital. The major focus of the training program is to provide comprehensive care for GI patients under the supervision of board-certified gastroenterology physicians. The program is flexible in design, allowing for the individual trainee’s needs, temperament, and abilities to be considered and addressed within the basic framework of the required services
A Year I Fellow should be able to assess new patient problems, formulate and execute a treatment plan with guidance and teach basic gastroenterology skills to medical students and other trainees. Year I fellows should begin to develop basic procedural competencies in diagnostic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.
A Year 2 Fellow should learn to assess and care for a larger volume of patients and learn and teach basic textbook and evidence-based medicine to medical students and other trainees. Year II fellows should independently perform diagnostic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy and begin to perform therapeutic maneuvers.
A Year 3 Fellow (senior level) should demonstrate rapid assessment and planning skills and near-attending level care planning and management, while teaching medical students and other trainees at near to or exceeding attending level teaching. Year III fellows should be able to perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures independently.
